You can still have an active sex life when you have diabetes, but you should keep an eye on your blood glucose levels. It is possible to have a Hypo caused by sex, but making sure your partner is aware of what to expect and having something to treat.


If you want to start a family, it is important that you talk to your doctor/diabetes nurse before you start trying. There are several factors to consider before getting pregnant if you have diabetes:

  • Keeping your blood glucose levels under control will give you a better chance of having a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby
  • You MUST tell your doctor that you want to start a family before you start trying to conceive
  • You should have regular contact with your diabetes care team during pregnancy so they can help you to monitor your blood glucose levels and check the baby's development.

Make sure you do regular blood glucose tests and know what levels you should be aiming for.
